Gowanus Open Studios
Gowanus, Brooklyn, NY 11215
About this happenin
About a dozen Gowanus artists started Gowanus Open Studios in the 1990s, opening their studios to the neighbors for a weekend. Arts Gowanus still runs it every October, and a recent edition had more than 400 artists at over 90 locations, one of the largest open studios events in New York City. Getting in costs nothing. The studios sit in old factories and warehouses between Pacific Street and 19th Street, from Smith Street to Fifth Avenue, and doors have been open from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Artists are on hand to talk about their work and how they make it, and you can buy straight from the person who made it. Printed maps go out all over the neighborhood, with signs on the street to point the way.
More in October: 12 other New York events.
