Flushing Lunar New Year Parade
Union Street and 39th Avenue, Flushing, NY 11354
About this happenin
Lion and dragon dances open the Flushing Lunar New Year Parade at 11am, in front of the 109th Precinct at Union Street and 39th Avenue. The Flushing Chinese Business Association runs it on a Saturday in late January or February. The date follows the lunar calendar, and the parade has landed on the Saturday after Lunar New Year. Mr. Met has led the march, with the police banner and a marching band behind him. At its biggest, the association counted more than 10,000 marchers from community groups and ethnic organizations, and over 100,000 people watching from the sidewalks. Lunar New Year is now a New York City public school holiday, which the association says has made the parade matter more to the neighbourhood than ever.
More in February: 5 other New York events.
