About this happenin
In 1977 the dancer and choreographer Charles Rudolph Davis, known as Baba Chuck, created DanceAfrica at BAM in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. It runs over Memorial Day weekend, a festival of African and African American dance and music that BAM calls America's largest celebration of its kind and its own longest-running program. Performances fill the Howard Gilman Opera House, with master classes, community events, the FilmAfrica series, visual art and a late-night dance party around them. Outside, the bazaar is free. More than 150 vendors from around the world sell food, crafts and fashion on Ashland Place and Lafayette Avenue. Abdel R. Salaam has been artistic director since 2015.
More in May: 10 other New York events.
