Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge
Stillwell Avenue and the Boardwalk, Brooklyn, NY 11224
About this happenin
Thousands of people run into the Atlantic at Coney Island Beach on New Year's Day, in bathing suits and in costumes. The Coney Island Polar Bear Club, founded by Bernarr Macfadden in 1903 and the oldest winter bathing club in the country, opens the plunge to the public. Its regular Sunday swims, November through April, are for members, so this is the day anyone can go in with them. It costs nothing to plunge, though the club strongly encourages a donation of at least $30, and the money goes to nonprofits in Coney Island. Register online ahead of time or on your phone at the event, then check in on Stillwell Avenue for the wristband you need to go in the water. Bring a towel and warm clothes for afterward, plus old shoes for the sand. NYC Parks has changing areas on the Boardwalk at Stillwell Avenue.
