Dyker Heights Christmas Lights
84th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues, Brooklyn, NY 11228
About this happenin
The houses of Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, between 83rd and 86th Streets and 10th and 13th Avenues, are covered in Christmas lights every December and crowded with holiday figures. Residents put the displays up themselves, some with professional decorators, and visitors walk from house to house. Viewing is free, and a few homeowners sell hot chocolate out front. Lucy Spata began decorating her house on 84th Street in the 1980s in memory of her mother, and the neighbors followed. Most homes light up in late November or early December and stay lit through Christmas, sometimes into early January. Mid December weekend evenings, roughly 5 to 9 p.m., are the crowded ones, and weeknights are quieter. Take the R train to 86th Street and walk. These are family homes, so stay on the sidewalk and keep out of driveways.
