African American Day Parade
Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard at West 125th Street, New York, NY 10027
About this happenin
The African American Day Parade marches along Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard in Harlem, between 111th and 137th Streets, on the third Sunday in September. African American Day Parade, Inc., a nonprofit founded in 1968, held the first one in 1969 under the theme "Africa's Gift to America", with Adam Clayton Powell Jr. and Shirley Chisholm as its first Grand Marshals. The boulevard was picked because it was the heart of the Harlem Renaissance. More than 200 organizations walk it now, among them marching bands, dance ensembles, fraternities and sororities, and community leaders, and the parade counts more than 900,000 people watching from the sidewalks. Each year's theme is one of five fields: business, education, health, politics and government, or arts and culture. On the Saturday before, a community celebration brings performers and vendors.
