About this happenin
Southern Decadence is the Labor Day weekend celebration of the New Orleans gay and lesbian community, held in the French Quarter. It began in 1972, when a group of friends calling themselves the Decadents held a costume party at a Treme house called Belle Reve and invited guests to dress as their favorite Southern Decadent. Ambush Publishing puts out the official guide and holds the trademark. The Grand Marshal parade is the main event. It steps off from the Golden Lantern bar on Royal Street on the Sunday of the weekend, as it has since 1981. The parade, the bead toss, the Friday drag show at the Golden Lantern and the Leather Decadence block party at the Phoenix are all free. No one pass covers every event. Passes are sold venue by venue, at places such as Oz and the Corner Pocket. Parking is banned on some Quarter streets and cabs are hard to get, so plan to walk. Drinks go in plastic cups. Frederick Wright became the first Grand Marshal in 1974, and the sitting one still chooses the next.
