About this happenin

The St. Patrick Parade of Jefferson, known to most people as the Metairie Road parade, has rolled through Old Metairie on a Sunday in mid-March since 1971. It is the oldest parade in Jefferson Parish, and the committee that runs it says it is the only one that still follows the original Metairie Road route. About 110 units take part: marching groups, bands, floats and trucks, all handing down throws and produce to the crowd. It starts at 41st Street and Severn Avenue, follows Severn south, turns onto Metairie Road, cuts over to Focis Street and disbands at Canal Street. A stormy forecast once pushed it three weeks, to April. On the Friday before, Gennaro's Bar hosts the free Old Metairie Irish Festival on Metairie Road under the Causeway overpass, with food and live music, and the Grand Marshal is introduced.
