Italian American St. Joseph's Day Parade
Hilton New Orleans Riverside, 2 Poydras St, New Orleans, LA 70130
About this happenin
Tuxedoed marchers, brass bands, floats and costumed maids make up the Italian American St. Joseph Society's night parade through the French Quarter and the Central Business District each March. Recent editions have rolled at 6 PM on a Saturday, and it is free to watch. It is billed as the largest St. Joseph celebration in the United States. The society was founded in 1970 and counts about 1,500 members. Riders and marchers join through its membership program, and it also holds a pasta lunch at the Hilton Riverside the day before. Balcony and corner spots along Royal and Bourbon Streets fill early, and the route shifts from year to year. Red, white and green is the suggested dress. The throws are the point: silk flowers and fava beans, both symbols of luck and gratitude, so bring a bag to carry them home.
