About this happenin

Crawfish is the point at the Louisiana Crawfish Festival, four days each March, Thursday through Sunday, at the Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center in Chalmette. Over 30 food vendors serve about 70 seafood dishes, and an eating contest and crawfish races are part of the program. Bands play daily, and a carnival midway runs alongside. Gates open in the evening on Thursday and Friday and at noon on the weekend. Admission has been free on Thursday, $5 on Friday and $10 on Saturday and Sunday, with food and rides extra. Bags must be clear. Outside food and coolers are turned away, and once you leave there is no re-entry. The grounds are all concrete, so wheelchairs roll easily. Knights of Columbus Rummel Council 5747 started the festival in 1975 as a fundraiser. It stopped after Hurricane Katrina and came back in 2007, and the Louisiana Crawfish Fest Foundation has returned more than $2 million to St. Bernard Parish since.

More in March: 14 other New Orleans events.
