Chalmette Tomato Festival

About this happenin
Tomato-a-la-Chalmette is the signature dish of the Our Lady of Prompt Succor Tomato Festival, held each April on the church and school grounds at 2320 Paris Road in Chalmette, with rides and local bands built around Creole tomato season. The parish has run it since 1951. It opens Friday evening and runs through Sunday. Admission has been $5 a person each day, and children under 10 and OLPS students get in free. Rides run on pay-one-price wristbands (a day band, or a weekend band that has to be bought ahead through the school) or on individual tickets. Children under 16 need an adult with them. The midway games pay out in tokens you trade for prizes. The menu also takes in chargrilled oysters, jambalaya, barbecue, shrimp fettuccine and crawfish fried rice. Local bands play each evening and school performers take the stage on weekend days. The Miss, Teen, Junior and Children's tomato pageants are part of the weekend.
More in April: 5 other New Orleans events.
