Krampus NOLAuf Parade (Krewe of Krampus)
Independence St & Royal St, New Orleans, LA 70117
About this happenin
The Krewe of Krampus runs a Krampuslauf through Bywater, New Orleans, on a Saturday night in early December and bills it as the largest in America. The Sisters of Shhh walk ahead, women in white whose job is to quiet the crowd so Krampus doesn't notice you. Catch a sister's eye and you might get a hand-decorated lump of white coal. Then come the Krampuses, goat-horned and shaggy. They swing birch switches and clank with chains. The krewe has been plastic-bead-free since it began, so the throws are lumps of coal and doubloons, both made with recycled glass. It's free. The parade starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp and generally runs rain or shine, and street parking in Bywater fills early. Spectators can dress in Alpine, winter, holiday or Krampus-inspired clothes, but full creature costumes are reserved for krewe members. Accessibility Row on Independence Street has an ASL interpreter and audio description. To get a lump of coal thrown your way, come in costume with a sign or yell "Give me glass!"
