Family Gras

About this happenin
Carnival comes to the Veterans Memorial Boulevard neutral ground in Metairie for Family Gras, a free weekend across from Lakeside Shopping Center, run by Visit Jefferson Parish. When the last set ends, krewes such as Excalibur and MadHatters roll right in front of the festival site, so you watch from the grounds instead of hunting for a spot along the route. The music comes first, with national acts and Louisiana bands on the main stage. Around it sit an art market selling Mardi Gras accessories and handmade jewelry, and a kids' court with face painting and games for children 12 and under. Food vendors sell from the Flambeau Food Court. Collapsible stadium chairs are allowed, but coolers and outside food or drink are not, and the gate has metal detectors and bag checks. Family Gras began in 2007 and lands in late January or February, ahead of Mardi Gras Day. The New Orleans Track Club's Mardi Gras 10K and 5K finishes at the festival.
More in January: 4 other New Orleans events.
