Phunny Phorty Phellows Twelfth Night Streetcar Ride
8200 Willow St, New Orleans, LA 70118
About this happenin
The Phunny Phorty Phellows ride a costumed party streetcar up the St. Charles line every January 6, Twelfth Night, and that ride opens the New Orleans Carnival season. Two king cakes come along, one cut for the women and one for the men, and whoever finds the plastic baby in each becomes Queen and Boss Phellow for the year. The masked krewe gathers at the RTA streetcar barn on Willow Street near South Carrollton Avenue, and the car leaves at 7 p.m. sharp. The krewe's site gives 6:30 p.m. for boarding and posts no fare, so ask the krewe. Revelers carry signs with humorous slogans, and the Storyville Stompers brass band plays for champagne toasts and second line dancing. The krewe cuts a ribbon and announces that it is Carnival time, then boards a streetcar still dressed for Christmas. The first beads of the season fly on the way to the Canal Street turnaround and back. The first krewe of this name followed Rex on Mardi Gras Day in 1878. The current one revived it in 1981 and began the streetcar ride in 1982.
