Downtown Super Sunday
Orleans Ave & Moss St, New Orleans, LA 70119
About this happenin
The Circle of Chiefs organises Downtown Super Sunday, a Mardi Gras Indian procession it calls "Indian Cha WA," which gathers at Orleans Avenue and Moss Street on Bayou St. John. Before the march starts, tribes from around the city stand along the bayou in hand-sewn suits of beadwork and feathers, close enough that people can look at the stitching and take photos. The procession steps off in the early afternoon. It follows Orleans Avenue to Broad Street, turns onto St. Bernard Avenue and ends at Hardin Park on North Dorgenois. Brass bands and the Original Black Seminole Baby Dolls have marched in the line, and the drumming and chanting go the whole way. It is one of three Super Sundays, with the Uptown one in mid-March and another on the Westbank. The downtown date drifts between late March and April. NOPD has closed streets and posted no-parking zones along the route, so walk or take transit. Give the Indians room and photograph politely.
