About this happenin
The Creole Tomato Festival fills the French Market District and Dutch Alley in New Orleans each June with dishes built around a single fruit, and Saturday opens with the Ripe & Ready Second Line. It forms at Oscar Dunn Park across from Jackson Square and walks to the festival. Anyone can join, and tomato attire is encouraged. The French Market puts it on over a Saturday and Sunday in the first or second weekend of the month, and hours have run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Music is free, and so are the dance lessons. Bands play on the stages through the afternoon. Restaurants in the market and the festival food booths cook with the Creole tomato, in things like a fried tomato BLT and a tomato stuffed with shrimp pasta. Farmers from the region sell fresh Creole tomatoes to take home. Between sets there are tomato eating contests and a Miss Creole Tomato Pageant.
