About this happenin
At the International Ballet Festival of Miami, principal dancers arrive from ballet companies in Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Americas, and some of those companies have made their U.S. debut here. The classical galas, closing night included, have been held at The Fillmore Miami Beach, where gala tickets have started around $50. The festival runs about three weeks, from the last week of July into mid-August. Its home base is the Miami Hispanic Cultural Arts Center at 111 SW 5th Avenue in downtown Miami. The center is the J. W. Warner House, a home on the National Register of Historic Places. The Miami Hispanic Ballet, a nonprofit company founded in 1993, produces it. Around the galas, the program is a dance film series, dance-inspired art exhibitions, book presentations and master classes. The art series opens with a new poster each year, unveiled at a reception. Two awards are presented every year: A Life for Dance, for a lifetime in ballet, and Criticism and Culture of Ballet, for dance critics.
