About this happenin
Books in Haitian Creole and French sit next to English ones at the Little Haiti Book Festival, a one-day gathering at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex in Miami. Local authors and publishers set up in the complex's marketplace, with food vendors alongside, and a DJ keeps the courtyard going all day on konpa and rara. Panels in the theater are often in Haitian Creole with English interpretation. Sosyete Koukouy, the Haitian cultural group behind it, presents the festival with Miami Book Fair; it used to be the Haitian-Caribbean Book Festival. Lately it falls on the first Sunday of May, with the first sessions at 11 a.m., and a streamed panel day has followed two Sundays later. Children's Alley fills with storytimes and art-making, and Books for Free gives kids books to take home.
