Goombay Festival
Grand Avenue, Coconut Grove, Miami, FL 33133
About this happenin
The Goombay Festival turns Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove into a Bahamian street party, and the City of Miami lists it as free. It falls on the first weekend of June or close to it, Friday evening through Sunday. The route runs from SW 37th Avenue to Elizabeth Street, with more programming at Armbrister Park. Junkanoo is the heart of it. Bands of drummers and brass players move down the avenue in costumes made from cardboard, crepe paper, feathers and beads, a tradition that goes back to the slavery era in the Bahamas. Vendors sell conch salad and conch fritters alongside barbecue, and local and regional artists perform. A planning committee tied to Little Bahamas of Coconut Grove runs it now. The festival began in the late 1970s, and the first Saturday reportedly drew about 80,000 people. Herb Hiller, a consultant for Norwegian Caribbean Lines, came up with it after cycling through the Grove and meeting Bahamian business owners.
