Tomball German Heritage Festival
201 S Elm St, Tomball, TX 77375
About this happenin
Each spring the old downtown streets of Tomball, around the Depot Plaza near 201 S. Elm Street, fill with German music from Friday evening through Sunday. The festival honours the German families who settled this part of Texas from 1840. It began with one oompah band on a flatbed trailer and now has several stages of live music, street vendors, a carnival, beer and German food. Admission is free, and so is parking. The keg is tapped at 10:30 a.m. Saturday to open the festival. High school German clubs dance through the weekend alongside folk dance troupes, and the contests carry prizes: the chicken dance, yodeling, the Schuhplattler and the stein hoist, where you hold a full stein at arm's length and are out the moment it droops. A free shuttle runs Saturday and Sunday from the east lot of HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball. Beer sales are cash only, and small leashed pets are welcome. The same organisers run a German Christmas market in December.
More in April: 6 other Houston events.
