About this happenin
For four days in May, the Pasadena Strawberry Festival uses the whole 106-acre Pasadena Convention Center and Municipal Fairgrounds in Pasadena, Texas. It began as a one-time celebration on a high school football practice field and now draws more than 50,000 people. The theme is the years when Pasadena was known as the Strawberry Capital of the South, a very different picture from the petrochemical industry of today. The festival bills the World's Largest Strawberry Shortcake. More than 130 teams play mud volleyball on 16 mud-filled courts, and there is a barbecue cook-off. In mutton bustin, children at least 3 years old and under 70 pounds hold on to a sheep for six seconds, with helmets provided. The baby float parade sends decorated wagons and strollers carrying infants and toddlers from Campbell Hall to the Convention Center, down the midway and back. A carnival runs on the midway, and a general admission ticket covers the grounds and the concerts. The money goes to scholarships for local students and to other nonprofits.
