About this happenin

Houston's Nigerian community marks Independence with the Nigeria Cultural Parade and Festival, a parade and festival at Discovery Green in downtown Houston. Culturally Naija and WeLead, Inc. put it on, and they bill it as the official Nigerian Independence event. The organizers say Houston has the largest Nigerian population outside Nigeria. Cultural groups come out in traditional dress and dance, and a masquerade exhibition shows masquerades from Nigeria's major tribal groups. Jollof rice and peppered suya are on sale, and the grounds have a market and a kids zone. Admission is free. The organizers ask visitors to come in cultural attire, and it goes ahead rain or shine.

More in October: 13 other Houston events.
