Magnolia Park Dia de los Muertos Festival and Parade
7000 Avenue Q, Houston, TX 77011
About this happenin
A parade through Houston's East End and a free festival at Hidalgo Park, 7000 Avenue Q, make up Magnolia Park Día de los Muertos. Neighbors began it in 2014 as a block party, and about 300 people came the first year. It has drawn thousands since and has always been free. The parade steps off at 10 a.m. at 75th Street and Avenue F and follows Canal Street, Maltby Street and 70th Street to the park. Local high school marching bands and folklórico dancers are in it, along with floats, mariachi music and car clubs in their lowriders. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with live music. There are two altars, a community altar and one for pets. Anyone can send in a photo of someone they miss, and the organizers print it for the altar. Magnolia Park is Houston's first barrio, platted in 1890 and annexed to the city in 1926.
