About this happenin

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo calls itself the world's largest livestock show, and for three weeks every March it fills Reliant Park in Houston. Thousands of Texas 4-H and FFA students bring animals to show, among more than 30,000 entries, and the junior market auctions set world records. It began in 1932 as the Houston Fat Stock Show. The rodeo and the downtown parade were added in 1938. A 130-foot Ferris wheel with air-conditioned cabins stands over the carnival, and more than 300 vendors sell food and goods across the grounds. The Champion Wine Garden, open to the public, pours more than 75 award-winning wines. In The Junction, 5- and 6-year-olds can sign up on the day for mutton bustin', and AGVENTURE, in Hall A of Reliant Center, is where children learn about farming. Grounds admission does not cover the nightly rodeo and concert in Reliant Stadium. The World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest opens the run in the last week of February, with more than 250 teams cooking. Most team tents are invitation-only. Contest admission gets you into the Garden Stage for Texas country acts and the Rockin' Bar-B-Que Saloon, where the Chuckwagon hands out a free barbecue plate.
