About this happenin
Comicpalooza, which bills itself as Texas' largest pop-culture festival, is a long weekend at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston. It began in 2008 as a signing in the lobby of a Katy movie theater, drew 500 people, and moved to the George R. Brown in 2010. Programming runs in tracks for anime, comics, cosplay, electronic gaming, literature, podcasts and tabletop games. Younger fans get their own area, Kidtopia, with Dungeons and Dragons sessions and a kids' cosplay contest, and the main Cosplay Contest is held every year. Celebrity karaoke and a Friday Night Bash fill the evenings. Fight Club runs fighting-game tournaments on more than 50 setups. The Itasha Showdown puts cars and motorcycles wrapped in anime and other fandom art on show. It usually lands in May, though it has run as early as March and as late as July.
More in May: 4 other Houston events.
