Where to stay

The Marriott Marquis, one of the downtown Houston hotels, is four minutes on foot from the George R. Brown, where Anime Matsuri takes three floors from Thursday to Sunday. Check-in is at 4 PM and you have to be 21, so a group of younger fans needs someone older to check in.

For four days each July, Thursday to Sunday, Anime Matsuri fills three floors of the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston. The anime convention has run for two decades and has been at the George R. Brown since 2014. The exhibit hall has an Artist Alley with its own stage for live drawing, vendors, a video game area, Import Reactor (a show of imported cars and itasha) and Kabukicho, a goods section for ages 18 and up. The main events include a Disney Princess Party, a main cosplay contest and a lighter hallway one, a karaoke battle, anime bingo, a fashion show, a wrestling card called Wrestle Matsuri, and Club AM, which the convention bills as the largest rave in Houston. Anime Academy teaches manga illustration and game programming. Guests include voice actors and cosplayers. A weekend badge covers all four days, Thursday's preview day included, and every floor and main event. Single-day passes are sold for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and kids under 6 get in free.
