About this happenin
Open Streets closes Magnolia Avenue in Fort Worth's Near Southside to cars for one Saturday and hands it to people on foot and on wheels. The stretch runs from 8th Avenue to Hemphill Street, and the street shuts at 6 a.m. so the set-up can start. The event lasts six hours and is free. The westbound lane is the Ride & Roll zone for bicycles, skateboards, roller skates and scooters. The center turn lane belongs to walkers, strollers and dogs. The eastbound lane and the south bike lane hold more than 100 free activities from local businesses, nonprofits, schools and libraries, among them fitness classes, martial arts, yoga, obstacle courses and bike safety training. A temporary skate park goes up for the Skate Jam, and a small market sells handmade goods, with preference to Near Southside residents and business owners. The organiser is firm that it is not a music festival, an art fair or a beer bash. Near Southside, Inc. and the City of Fort Worth presented the first one in 2011. It stopped in 2020 for the pandemic and came back in 2024.
