Mayfest

About this happenin

Trinity Park in Fort Worth turns 33 acres beside the Trinity River over to Mayfest for four days around the first weekend in May. The first one was held in 1973, to celebrate the work that turned the river and its parks into community assets, and Mayfest, Inc. became a nonprofit in 1987. Three stages carry more than 50 local and regional bands, and four performing arts stages give local schools and groups a turn at tap, ballet, hip-hop and martial arts. The Art and Gift Market holds more than 135 vendors. Attraction shows come with admission, among them a lumberjack show and pig races, and there are carnival rides. The Children's Area, behind a white picket fence in the middle of the grounds, has more than 20 free activities for ages 3 to 12, including a chalk house and a giant sand pit. Tickets are required Friday through Sunday, and the opening Thursday is free to enter. Parking is at Farrington Field and the Dickies Arena Yellow Lot, with a tram to the north gate. Trinity Collaborative, the nonprofit that produces it, gives the proceeds to three of Mayfest's four founding organizations: the Junior League of Fort Worth, Streams & Valleys and the city's Park and Recreation Department.

More in April: 12 other Dallas-Fort Worth events.
