About this happenin
MAIN ST. Fort Worth Arts Festival closes Main Street through downtown Fort Worth for four days each April. Juried artists line the street and hundreds of bands and entertainers play free performances. Admission costs nothing. Businessman Robert Bass led the push in 1986 to start it, as a way to show off a downtown that was just coming back to life. The first festival ran three days with 140 artists, 60 performance groups and 600 volunteers, and about 80,000 people came. Downtown Fort Worth Initiatives, a nonprofit, still produces it. Food courts sit at 2nd Street, 4th Street and other corners, and the vendors source locally: turkey legs, empanadas, roasted corn, funnel cakes. A Maker's Zone gives kids hands-on stations including sand art and face painting, and the festival store at 5th and Main sells the year's commemorative poster. The organiser asks people to leave pets at home. Hours run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 8 p.m. on Sunday. Artist booths may close earlier in the evening.
More in April: 12 other Dallas-Fort Worth events.
