Arts in Bloom fills the streets around the courthouse square in downtown McKinney with a juried art festival every April. Admission is free, rain or shine. More than 125 artists set up booths: painters, sculptors, jewelry makers, photographers and woodworkers. A demo stage has potters, printmakers and painters working live, and the competition stage runs a Sketch Off, a Clay Throwdown and a Portrait Showdown, with amateur rounds that need no experience. Music plays on two stages. The Texas Wine Garden sells tasting packages that come with a festival glass, and Kids Arts Avenue has craft kits, a soft-play area and a petting zoo. Parking is free around downtown, and a free shuttle runs from First McKinney Baptist Church at peak hours. Leashed dogs are welcome.
