About this happenin
Harambee, a Swahili word meaning let's pull together, gives its name to a free festival at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Dallas. Residents who met at the center in the early 1970s started it as an alternative to Halloween, a day of positive culture for kids and grown-ups. The organizers call it the oldest and largest African American cultural event in Dallas-Fort Worth, with more than 15,000 people attending. Every child gets a free treat bag. Local radio stations back a full day of live music, and there are art and craft exhibits and rows of vendors. The Bullock Museum in Austin has featured it in an exhibit on Texas festivals.
More in October: 17 other Dallas-Fort Worth events.
