Denton Day of the Dead Festival
E Hickory St and Industrial St, Denton, TX 76201
About this happenin
Denton's Day of the Dead Festival fills downtown Denton, Texas, around Hickory, Oak and Industrial Streets on the last full weekend of October. The festival is free. Its organisers say it is not strictly a Day of the Dead event: it folds Día de Muertos and Halloween together into a fall street party. It grew out of Cirque du Horror, a family Halloween musical by local composer David J. Anzaldua that first played in 2009, with the first festival following in 2011. The musical still sells tickets and plays Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is the big day. Coffin races start at noon and run into the afternoon, bands and dancers play two stages, and the Street of Screams has free inflatables and games, with a puppet theatre putting on a show every hour. There are vendors, a costume contest, and a community altar with a Flight of Souls ceremony that ends in a burst of butterfly-shaped confetti. At twilight a lantern and costume parade winds around the Square. The Pinebox Derby takes Sunday.
