About this happenin
Two evenings of traditional music in Mandel Hall make up the University of Chicago Folk Festival, held in Hyde Park on a Friday and a Saturday in February. The university's Folklore Society, which formed in the early 1950s, put on the first festival in 1961, and Bill Monroe, Doc Watson and Muddy Waters were among the early names on the Mandel Hall stage. The society has held it every winter since. Bluegrass, old-time, Cajun, blues, Celtic and mariachi acts have all filled recent programs, and the stated aim is the best traditional music from around the country and the world. Free workshops run during the day on the Saturday at Ida Noyes Hall, on subjects from fiddle styles to Morris dance and barn dance, open to anyone with no ticket needed. The concerts have also streamed free online.
More in February: 6 other Chicago events.
