About this happenin
Every June, barbecue teams from Chicagoland restaurants set up their grills on Lincoln Avenue in Northcenter for Ribfest Chicago, a three-day street festival running from Irving Park Road up to Hutchinson Street. They compete for a Critics' Choice award chosen by a panel of judges and a People's Choice award voted by text, and more than 20 food vendors sell alongside them. Bands play all weekend. The kids area is at Lincoln and Berteau, the north end of the route. The Brown Line stops on Irving Park Road a few blocks east. The gate asks for a $10 suggested donation, though nobody walking in to shop or keep an appointment has to pay it, and the money goes back into Northcenter schools, nonprofits and greening work. Beer booths and most food vendors take cards as well as cash. Leave the dog at home: the organisers say the crowds, hot grills and dropped bones make it a bad place for one.
