Maifest Chicago
Lincoln Ave & Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60625
About this happenin
Lincoln Square, which the organiser calls Chicago's original German neighborhood, closes the corner of Lincoln and Western avenues for Maifest, a free spring festival of German beer and bands. The Maifest Committee, a nonprofit founded to promote Chicago's German heritage, runs it for German-American clubs such as the Rheinischer Verein, the American Aid Society and Dank Haus, whose members serve the food and drinks. Opening night crowns the Mai Queen and taps the keg. Bands then play a main stage and an auxiliary stage through Sunday, when the clubs put on an ethnic program of folk dancing. Food and drink are paid for in tickets, cash only, and there are ATMs on site. The menu is short and German: bratwurst or thueringer, leberkaese, pretzels, landjaeger and cake. Beer comes in stein cups you can refill, with a limit of two beers per person.
