About this happenin
On a June weekend the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council closes a stretch of South Ashland Avenue for Fiesta Back of the Yards, a street carnival in the neighborhood with music and dance on its stages. The fiesta has been on Ashland for the past three years, and the council runs it with security measures it says are there to keep the community safe. The last one drew more than 150,000 visitors. More than 40 local vendors lined the street. Local artists gave more than 40 performances, and the rides ran on a Mega Pass that cost $75 for the weekend. Joseph Meegan, superintendent of Davis Square Park, and the organizer Saul Alinsky formed the council in 1939, during the Depression.
