About this happenin
Paseo Boricua, the stretch of Division Street in Humboldt Park that runs between two giant steel Puerto Rican flags, hosts Fiesta Boricua for two days over Labor Day weekend. The Puerto Rican Cultural Center has run it for more than thirty years. Two stages carry bomba, plena, trova and salsa. On Saturday afternoon there is the Misa Jíbara, a Mass set to the décimas of the island's troubadours, and that night a bombazo at La Casita de Don Pedro. Sunday is for walking the street flag to flag. Recent editions have each honored a town in Puerto Rico, Ciales and Loíza among them, and brought its musicians and dancers to Chicago. More than 40 vendors have worked the street, with frituras, piña coladas and crafts.
