Chicago SummerDance is a free dance series run by the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, with nights in neighborhood parks and a closing run at the Spirit of Music Garden in Grant Park. Every night opens with a lesson from a professional instructor, so beginners are fine, and then a live band or a DJ takes over for social dancing. Each date has its own style, and salsa, plena, swing, Bollywood, country, Chicago Steppin' and house have all had a night. The park dates are Wednesday evenings, part of the Chicago Park District's Night Out in the Parks, with one Sunday session at the Maxwell Street Market. The Grant Park run is Thursday to Saturday, with the lesson at 6 p.m. and music from 7:15 to 9. The dance floor there is smooth recycled plastic boards, and a limited number of armless chairs are set out.
