About this happenin
Chicago is the birthplace of house music, and each August the City of Chicago marks it with the Chicago House Music Festival and Conference, four free days of DJ sets and dancing spread across downtown. It has run Thursday to Sunday in late August. The kickoff is a run of daytime DJ sets at the Daley Plaza Farmers Market. On Thursday and Friday the Chicago Cultural Center holds the conference, with panels on the music business and its history, while the Chicago House Dance Summit runs masterclasses and the qualifying rounds of a house dance competition. Friday night is a house edition of SummerDance in Grant Park. Saturday moves to Millennium Park, with several stages running from 1 to 9 p.m. and the dance competition finals. Sunday winds down on the Chicago Riverwalk, where people bring blankets and chairs.
