About this happenin
Washington Park's Sunken Garden, at 55th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue, holds the African Festival of the Arts over Labor Day weekend. Africa International House USA, a Chicago nonprofit, calls it its flagship event. It grew out of Window to Africa, an African art and gift store in Hyde Park's Harper Court, whose supporters started running the festival in 1989. Performers play the Dee Parmer Main Stage, and the grounds are laid out as villages with names like Timbuktu Marketplace and the Nubia Fine Art Gallery. The organiser bills its market as one of the Midwest's largest African marketplaces, and around it are African and Diaspora food, fashion showcases, drumming and dance, wellness activities and family programming. In its latest edition the gates were open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. Admission is by ticket, sold online through the organiser.
