About this happenin
The 57th Street Art Fair runs along 57th Street in Hyde Park, beside the University of Chicago campus, on the first full weekend of June. Silversmith Mary Louise Womer started it in 1948 with 51 artists, and the fair now calls itself the oldest juried art fair in the Midwest. Up to 200 artists from all over North America take part, chosen by a blind jury of artists, arts professionals and curators. Everything has to be original fine art or craft. Reproductions and mass-produced work are out, and so is anything made with AI. Artists stay at their booths to talk about the work. Live blues plays and food trucks line the street, and children have activities of their own. Admission is free, and more than 20,000 people come each year. A small committee of community members still runs it.
More in June: 21 other Chicago events.
