Private cars can't drive Zion Canyon's Scenic Drive in Utah from March through November, and a free shuttle carries everyone up the canyon instead. A second free one, the Springdale Line, stops all through town every 10 to 15 minutes and is the way in when the visitor center lot is full. Angels Landing, from the Grotto at stop 6, needs a lottery permit only for its last half mile, the chains section past Scout Lookout. The Narrows needs none. From the last stop, the Temple of Sinawava, you can head upstream any day the Virgin River runs at 150 cfs or less with no flash flood warning out.
