Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake, 1,943 feet deep, fills the caldera of Mount Mazama, an Oregon volcano that stood some 12,000 feet until eruptions about 7,700 years ago collapsed it. Native Americans watched it happen. The 33-mile Rim Drive circles the lake past 30 overlooks, but snow usually keeps the full loop closed until mid-July, and it shuts again at the first big storm or November 1, whichever comes first. Once it closes, the road is left to skiers and snowshoers, and rangers lead weekend snowshoe walks with loaner snowshoes, by reservation. Clouds hide the lake about half the winter, so check the park webcam before you drive up.
