Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, Oregon, is 235 feet tall. The tide pools around its base are best on a low tide of 0.0 feet or lower. Get there about an hour before the low to look for sea stars and green anemones, and don't climb above the barnacle line. The Gower Street beach access, a block west of the Midtown public lot, is the closest to the rock. Tufted puffins nest on Haystack Rock's grassy north slope, and from May to Labor Day volunteers set up a scope at daytime low tides so you can watch them.
