Four waterfalls drop down the Little River inside this 10,400-acre forest between Brevard and Hendersonville, and the easy 2.2-mile loop past High, Triple, and Hooker Falls is the one nearly everyone walks first. Triple Falls is the showpiece, a tiered cascade with a flat rock ledge you can stand on, and you may recognize it from The Hunger Games and The Last of the Mohicans. Past the headline falls, more than 100 miles of old logging roads and singletrack open up for hikers, mountain bikers, and horses, with quieter Bridal Veil Falls waiting at the end of a longer walk.

One of the most photographed waterfalls in the Blue Ridge, Looking Glass Falls drops a clean 60 feet over a rounded granite face just steps from US-276 in Pisgah National Forest. A short stairway leads down to the plunge pool, where the spray cools the air on a summer afternoon and the rock takes on a mirror sheen after rain. It runs year-round and turns to ice columns in a hard freeze, so the view rewards a stop in any season.

Locals call it the Grand Canyon of the Southern Appalachians, and the nickname earns itself: the Linville River drops nearly 2,000 feet through a forested chasm walled by Table Rock, Hawksbill, and Shortoff Mountain. Pull off the gravel road to Wiseman's View and the whole gorge opens below you, ridge after ridge fading into blue haze, with rapids glinting at the bottom. There are no railings or paved loops here past the overlooks, just one of the rawest stretches of wilderness east of the Mississippi.

Visitors can walk the famed Anhinga Trail, paddle mangrove waterways, or take an airboat-free ranger tour through the 'River of Grass.'
