About
Katahdin Woods and Waters protects about 87,500 acres of Maine's North Woods, and in 2020 DarkSky International certified it an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, the first on the eastern seaboard. The Park Service has logged a reading of 21.88 magnitudes per square arcsecond here, Bortle 2 territory, about as dark as the East gets. The viewing spot is Katahdin Overlook, mile 6.4 of the gravel Katahdin Loop Road, where a short driveway climbs to a clearing with picnic tables and a vault toilet. It reopened in 2026 after a rebuild, with a new picnic pavilion. The Milky Way stands over the silhouette of Katahdin, 5,269 feet, with Millinocket Lake below and no town glow. Stargazing notes: the 17-mile Loop Road is one way, rough gravel, posted at 15 mph, and open to vehicles from late May until November 1. No fee and no cell service. Aim for a new moon in July or August and pack for 40s at night.

Congaree National Park protects the largest tract of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the country, a floodplain of towering bald cypress and tupelo near Hopkins, South Carolina. Walk the 2.6-mile elevated Boardwalk Loop past cypress knees and trees over 500 years old, home to some of the tallest trees in the eastern U.S. For two weeks in late spring, the park's synchronous fireflies flash in unison, one of only a few places in North America where that happens.
Redwood National Park, stretching inland from the foggy coast near Orick, shelters the tallest trees on Earth, coast redwoods that soar past 300 feet in cathedral-quiet groves. Pick up a free permit at the Kuchel Visitor Center to hike into the legendary Tall Trees Grove, or wander among giants like Big Tree on the Prairie Creek trails. Cool ocean fog keeps the forest lush and green year round.
Sequoia National Park in California's southern Sierra Nevada shelters the giant sequoias, the most massive trees on Earth, including General Sherman, which holds the title by sheer volume. Walk the paved Congress Trail through the Giant Forest, then climb the 400 steps up Moro Rock for a sweeping view of the Great Western Divide. Summer parking near Sherman fills by mid-morning, so arrive early or ride the shuttle.
