Cars drive on the sand at Daytona Beach in sections marked by signs and wooden posts, at 10 mph with headlights on. Land speed runs on this beach started in 1904 and ended with Malcolm Campbell's 276.816 mph in 1935. Driving hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from May through October, or until sundown if that comes first, and sunrise to sunset the rest of the year, tide permitting. The Volusia Beaches app shows which ramps are open. The WPA built the Oceanfront Bandshell out of coquina in the 1930s, and on summer Fridays its concerts are free. From late May through September the Saturday shows end with fireworks.
