Every January 6, Tarpon Springs stages the largest Epiphany observance outside Greece: an Orthodox liturgy, a procession through downtown, and a cross dive into Spring Bayou. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral has marked Christ's baptism this way for more than a century. After Orthros and Divine Liturgy, clergy, chanters and children carrying icons walk to the bayou, where the presiding hierarch blesses the water and releases a white dove. A wooden cross goes in next, and Orthodox boys aged 16 to 18 dive after it; whoever surfaces holding it is said to be blessed for the year. Greek food, music and dancing follow at the Glendi. Know before you go: admission is free. Recent editions have opened services at 8 a.m., with the blessing and dive between 1 and 2 p.m. and the Glendi running until about 6 p.m. Crowds ring the water, so arrive early. The cathedral live streams the ceremony on YouTube. Craig Park, on the bayou, has restrooms and a playground, and city offices close for the day.
