Once a year Tampa turns the Hillsborough River a vivid emerald, and the River O'Green crowd watches from Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. The dye is EPA approved and NSF certified, the same tracer used to follow drinking water, and it spreads downstream past the Riverwalk while boats and kayaks drift through it. On shore the day runs Irish: step dancers from local academies, buskers and bands, lawn games, food trucks and a beer line. A pet costume contest lands mid afternoon, and dogs are welcome. The coloring starts at 11 a.m., the moment the festival opens, so arrive early if the green water is what you came for. The party runs on through the afternoon, with games and activities pitched at kids as much as adults. Entry is free, with food and drink sold on site. The nearby downtown garages are the practical place to park.
