The first 15K wave leaves Brorein Street at 6:45 a.m., four minutes on foot from the race's host hotel, the Embassy Suites, which is listed with the downtown Tampa hotels.
Every distance at the Publix Gasparilla Distance Classic is a flat out-and-back along Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, with the bay alongside and a finish at the foot of the Platt Street Bridge. The 15K and 5K go off on Saturday morning, the half marathon and 8K on Sunday. Friday is a dog walk, and Challenge entries stack two or four of the distances across the weekend. Phillimon Hanneck set the 15K men's course record, 42:35, in 1994, and Elizabeth McColgan's women's record of 47:43 goes back to 1988. Aid stations hand out water at every mile after the first mile and a half, and ice-cold towels wait at the finish. Walkers have a dedicated 5K and 8K and must hold a 16-minute mile. Entries are non-refundable, and each distance has a cap that closes registration when it fills. The free Health & Fitness Expo at the Tampa Convention Center doubles as packet pickup on Friday and Saturday. The all-volunteer association behind the race has given $7 million to Tampa Bay youth programs since the first one in February 1978.
